Red Sox Rumors: These Teams Inquired About Rafael Devers

Rafael Devers was a popular man this weekend, especially considering the fact none of us knew he was going to get traded.

The Boston Red Sox shocked the general public when they showed their disgruntled superstar the door and shipped him off to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, but that decision didn’t come without some deliberation.

MassLive’s Sean McAdam reported that multiple teams inquired about the slugger’s availability, including the Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays. McAdam would go on to share that none seemed to be as motivated as San Francisco, who ultimately got a move across the finish line.

It’s hard to believe teams knew how quickly this thing would come together, though.

McAdam, full of scoops on the night of the trade, also reported that these trade discussions might not have started until early in the weekend. Red Sox manager Alex Cora cancelled his pregame media availability on Friday, which is believed to be the point in which he was clued in on a potential deal.

The Red Sox didn’t waste very much time at all from that point, finalizing the deal following a series sweep of the rival New York Yankees and essentially hitting the reset button on their climb back into postseason contention — whether that was their intention or not.

Don’t you just love surprises, folks?

Devers will remain a topic of conversation around these parts for quite some time, with his first matchup against his former team scheduled for next weekend at Oracle Park. NESN will have full coverage of the series starting on Friday.
