Red Sox Send Recently Promoted Pitcher To Familiar Trade Partner

Brian Van Belle, we hardly knew ye.

The Boston Red Sox announced they dealt the right-handed pitcher to the Cincinnati Reds for cash considerations on Saturday, officially bringing an end to his tenure just days in.

Van Belle, 28, had been promoted from Triple-A Worcester on Monday, but was designated for assignment two days later with the club in need of a roster spot following their acquisition of reliever Jorge Alcala from the Minnesota Twins. Van Belle has absolutely shoved in a mostly starting role for the WooSox, going 5-1 with stellar 2.29 earned run average and striking out 41 batters in 51 innings.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has now made a couple of trades with the Reds, acquiring reliever Lucas Sims at the trade deadline last season before circling back and sending one their way this year.

Boston’s roster is currently full at 40.
