Red Sox Lose Recently Acquired First Baseman To White Sox
After Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury back in May, the Boston Red Sox were desperately scrambling to find help at first base. That led them to trade for Ryan Noda from the Los Angeles Angels, but less than a month later, his time with the team has come to an end.
The Red Sox picked up Noda for cash considerations and ended up stashing him in Triple-A Worcester. In 13 games with the WooSox, Noda hit .378 with three home runs and 13 runs batted in.
Despite that, the team opted to designate Noda for assignment Monday, as the duo of Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro have been holding their own at first base for the time being.
It didn’t take Noda long to find a new home, though, as the Chicago White Sox claimed him off of waivers Friday afternoon.
“1B/OF Ryan Noda today was claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox,” the Red Sox officially announced in a post on X.
It’s not much of a surprise that Chicago is looking for help at first base, as they just traded their former starting first baseman Andrew Vaughn to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Noda has not played in the majors yet this season, but he should have a chance to find his way in Chicago. In 164 major league games throughout his career, Noda is hitting .212 with 17 home runs and 54 RBIs.
Boston’s decision to move on from Noda is due in large part to its growing confidence in Gonzalez and Toro. On Friday night, Gonzalez earned the start at first against the left-handed Ryan Yarbrough.
