Marcelo Mayer Shouts Out Red Sox Fans After Monster Game

Marcelo Mayer has only played six games at Fenway Park so far, but he’s already loving it.

On Wednesday night, the Boston Red Sox rookie had the best game of his young career. He went 2-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs, leading the Red Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in front of the Fenway Faithful.

The homers — both of which traveled 400-plus feet into the right-field stands — were Mayer’s first at Fenway. They also marked the first multi-homer game of his career.

After the win, Mayer was all smiles. Not only did he credit Boston’s coaching staff for helping with his preparation, but he also gave the home crowd a major shoutout.

“It was awesome. I love this place. I love the energy that Fenway Park brings,” said the 22-year-old infielder. “It’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Like many left-handed hitters before him, Mayer is thriving at Fenway. In his first six games, the former first-round pick is batting .278/.350/.722 with two homers, two doubles and three RBI.

Despite the Red Sox’s 34-36 record, there’s still a palpable buzz at Fenway the last few weeks following the call-ups of Mayer and fellow top prospect Roman Anthony. Fans are excited about the team’s new stars and are filling the seats to see them in person.

While Anthony just arrived this week, Mayer has lived up to the hype so far. Through his first 15 games, he’s batting .250/.313/.523 (129 OPS+) with three homers, three doubles and four RBI. He’s also made some nice defensive plays at third base, stepping up in Alex Bregman’s absence.

Mayer’s career is just getting started, so Fenway’s going to be his home for a while. Good thing he’s already comfortable.
