Carlos Narváez Opens Up About Special Bond With Red Sox Legend
Carlos Narváez has only been with the Boston Red Sox for a few months, but he’s already developed a special bond with one of his predecessors behind the plate.
This season has been an adjustment for the 26-year-old rookie, who was traded from the New York Yankees in December. However, he’s hit the ground running in Boston, immediately establishing himself as the team’s starting catcher and one of its best players.
Narváez credits his early success to former All-Star catcher Jason Varitek, who’s now a member of Alex Cora’s coaching staff.
“He’s kind of like my second dad,” Narváez said in an interview with MLB. “He’s still our captain. He’s there for everything, if you’re doing bad or if you’re doing good.”
Narváez has come to lean on Varitek during his first season with the Red Sox, instantly forming a close connection with the two-time World Series champ. That tight bond has helped Narváez feel comfortable with his new team.
“In the game, before the game or after the game, I always come to see him,” Narváez said. “Now, I feel home…But at the beginning, since day one, he was awesome. Awesome with me, and I’m really thankful for that.”
The 53-year-old Varitek spent his entire 15-year career in Boston. A three-time All-Star and former team captain, he was a leader on and off the field.
More than a decade since his last game in 2011, Varitek now works for the Red Sox as their game-planning and run prevention coach. He’s also been an invaluable resource for Narváez, taking the young catcher under his wing and helping him navigate his first full Major League season.
Varitek’s support is paying off, as Narváez is flourishing. In 53 games, he’s batting .279/.355/.458 (126 OPS+) with 20 extra-base hits, 22 RBI and 29 runs. Per FanGraphs, he’s tied for the fourth-best WAR (2.2) among catchers, proving he’s already one of the best backstops in baseball.
With a great mentor like Varitek showing him the ropes, Narváez is in good hands.
