Marco Sturm Reveals Why He Accepted Bruins HC Gig — ‘Best Job In This City’
The Boston Bruins officially hired Marco Sturm to be their next head coach last week, ushering in a new era after the team fell short of expectations last season. And right off the bat, it’s clear that Sturm is fired up to be back in Boston.
During his time as a player in the NHL, Sturm spent five seasons with the Bruins, scoring 106 goals and tallying 87 assists during his 302 games with the team. He got traded to the Los Angeles Kings in December 2010, meaning he just missed out on being part of the B’s 2011 Stanley Cup squad.
Sturm has been working with the Kings since 2018, and he’s been the head coach of their AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, for the past three seasons. Now, he’s getting a shot to make his mark in the NHL with the Bruins.
It’s clear that Sturm’s ties with the B’s played a role in the team’s decision to hire him, and according to the man himself, the feeling is mutual.
When speaking about his new job, Sturm confidently declared he has “the best job” in the city of Boston.
“I got here late (Monday) from Florida. I was coming in late and I drove my rental car to the hotel, and I was looking around downtown and I was like, ‘I can’t believe I got the best job in this city,’” Marco Sturm said on “Felger & Mazz.”
“It’s not the easiest one, but I do believe I got the best job here, and I just can’t believe it. For me, a dream came true. And again, obviously, I want to be a head coach. It doesn’t matter where at, but this is special.”
The former German forward’s enthusiasm is hard to miss, but that will only get you so far in Boston. Sturm will have to immediately work on getting the Bruins back on track when it comes to their play on the ice, as CEO Charlie Jacobs and company have already voiced their playoff expectations for the 2025-26 campaign.
Armed with ample cap space and several new draft picks after a busy trade deadline, the B’s front office figures to be quite busy over the next few months. Once their work is done, it will be time for Marco Sturm to get to work and begin implementing his vision for his new team.
