Why isn’t Luis Diaz playing for Colombia vs. Peru in the 2026 CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers?

0 1
In Colombia's lineup against Peru, star Luis Diaz was nowhere to be seen, rising questions on why he isn't playing.

Luis Diaz has emerged as one of the standout figures in Colombia’s new generation, delivering stellar performances both in Europe and with the national team. But when Colombia faced Peru in a crucial 2026 CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifier, Diaz was noticeably absent—raising questions among fans and pundits alike.

Following a brilliant 2024-25 season with Liverpool—where he helped the Reds win the Premier League, scoring 17 goals and adding 8 assists in 50 appearances—Díaz rejoined Néstor Lorenzo’s squad aiming to keep Colombia’s World Cup hopes alive. Despite being named to the squad, the 27-year-old was unavailable for selection on Friday.

Luis Díaz will miss the match against Peru due to a one-game suspension. In Colombia’s last qualifier against Paraguay in March, the winger scored a goal, provided an assist, and was booked in the 81st minute—triggering a suspension for yellow card accumulation under CONMEBOL rules.

Though sidelined for this fixture, Díaz remains part of Colombia’s roster and is expected to return for next week’s critical clash against Argentina. In the meantime, Juan “Cucho” Hernández is expected to fill in on the left wing.

Is Luis Diaz leaving Liverpool?

In recent weeks, speculation has grown over a potential move for Diaz away from Anfield. While the Colombian star has already ruled out a switch to Saudi Arabia, FC Barcelona are reportedly showing strong interest in securing his services. Asked about his future during a recent press conference, Díaz left the door open:

I’m very happy at Liverpool. I’ve always said that. They’ve treated me very well from the first day I arrived. Right now, we’re in contact with them because obviously we’re also talking with other clubs. It’s normal—the market is opening, and we’re trying to sort out whatever is best for us.”

Whether he remains on Merseyside or seeks a new challenge, Diaz seems at peace with whatever lies ahead. “I’m just waiting to see what might happen. If Liverpool offer us a good renewal, or even if I stay the two years I have left on my contract, I’ll be happy and content. I’m just here to make a decision and see what’s best for us, for the future,” the Colombian star concluded.
