His shot stopping skills were exceptional as well as his fame for his long throwing abilities he spent most of his career plying his trade in his home country. This didn't impact him as he was a highly respected player of the time and widely regarded as one of the best. A multiple time League winner he was also a key member of the Soviet Union European Championship runner up side of 1988. For his performances he was named IFFHS Goalkeeper of the year recognised as the best in the world. World Soccer magazine awfully recognised him as the best goalkeeper in the world on 3 separate occasions in the 1980s which given the quality of goalkeeper at the time shows how highly rated he was. His quality was also recognised by the legendary Pele who named him in his list of the greatest living footballers in 2004
