Marco Sturm Sends Message To Bruins Fans After Being Named Head Coach

Marco Sturm will be an NHL head coach for the first time in his career, and the new Bruins bench boss is ready to get to work.

Boston on Thursday named Sturm the franchise’s 30th head coach. The 46-year-old is the first German head coach in NHL history and the first European head coach in Bruins history. Fans will remember the great moments Sturm brought on the ice during his five years donning the Spoked B, and he’ll look to bring more exciting moments as the new leader of the franchise.

“I’m so excited, and happy and honored to be the new head coach and be back in Boston,” Sturm said in a video posted by the Bruins. “I had a great time here as a player, and I’m really looking forward to leading this team and be behind the bench. Let’s do it together, Boston.”

Sturm has a decade of coaching experience, notably at the international level. He led his native Germany to the 2015 Deutschland-Cup title and helped it win silver at the world championship. He’s been part of the Los Angeles Kings organization and served as head coach of the AHL’s Ontario Reign for the past three seasons.

An introductory news conference will be held next Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m., with live coverage on NESN.
