Alex Bregman Gives Huge Vote Of Confidence To Red Sox Rookie
The Boston Red Sox have something in Marcelo Mayer.
Mayer, who is approaching the conclusion of his first week in the big leagues, might not have a stat line that jumps off the page (.217/.250/.304, two doubles, zero home runs), but there’s no doubt that he belongs. The 22-year-old rookie has been great on the defensive side, showcasing his talent with a sprawling play to take away extra bases in Friday’s victory over the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park.
Mayer’s stellar stab produced all sorts of reactions, including a meme-worthy glance from law enforcement, a fist pump and chest pound from the man himself, and a ringing endorsement from fans and one veteran teammate.
“Marcelo Mayer is gonna be great,” Underdog Fantasy’s Steve Perrault posted to X, drawing confirmation from Alex Bregman.
“100%,” Bregman’s post read.
Can you ask for a better shot of confidence than one from the man whose job you’re occupying?
The Red Sox are hoping that Mayer and Bregman, who built up quite the connection during spring training, can eventually take the field alongside one another. It’s the kind of left-side duo that produced a “playoffs-or-bust” mentality from fans entering the season.
It’ll be a while before we see it, but the hope that it one day happens should be enough for fans to get through what has been a rough stretch of late.
