Exclusive: Liverpool join race for €30m wonderkid transfer, but he could join Leipzig first
Liverpool are the latest club to show an interest in the potential transfer of Valencia’s talented young centre-back Cristhian Mosquera, CaughtOffside understands.
The highly-rated 20-year-old has shone in La Liga and is attracting a great deal of interest this summer, including from the Premier League.
Sources close to the situation have informed CaughtOffside that Liverpool are big admirers of Mosquera, who is also on Chelsea’s radar and whose asking price would be in the region of €30m.
Tottenham, Crystal Palace and West Ham have also been monitoring Mosquera, but it’s currently felt that he’s leaning towards a move to RB Leipzig.
Leipzig are also interested in the Spain Under-23 international, and CaughtOffside understands that the player and his representatives feel he could be best served by a move to the Bundesliga before perhaps joining a top English club later.
Cristhian Mosquera mapping out career path – could it eventually lead him to Liverpool?
Mosquera looks like he could do well not to rush into joining a top Premier League club straight away, and Leipzig seem like an ideal stepping stone for him.
The German side have often recruited and developed some of the world’s best young players, and always end up selling them at some point, usually for a considerable profit.
This policy has worked well for Leipzig and other clubs in the Red Bull group, so it’s easy to see why Mosquera would be tempted by them.
If he could perform well there for two or three years, it’s easy to imagine he could then get the chance to go to a club like Liverpool again.
Liverpool might need a CB now instead of waiting for Mosquera
Liverpool might still do well to bring in a new defender this summer, though, with Ibrahima Konate into the final year of his contract at Anfield.
The Reds also need to start thinking about signing a top young talent to come in as a long-term successor to the ageing Virgil van Dijk.
Mosquera seems like an ideal candidate, but it remains to be seen if he’ll end up being their top target, and if he’d favour a move to LFC at this stage of his career anyway.
