Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta responds to Tottenham trophy question as his side end the season empty-handed

0 2

There has been a lot of debate on whether Tottenham Hotspur have had a more successful season than Arsenal following their Europa League win, and the question has now been posed directly to Mikel Arteta himself.

Tottenham won the Europa League for the third time in their 143-year history by beating Manchester United 1-0 at San Mames on Wednesday.

It is the Lilywhites’ fourth continental honour overall, making them the fourth-most successful Premier League team in Europe, ahead of their North London rivals.

This win is particularly sweet for Spurs fans as it comes after a 17-year trophy drought and puts an end to endless mocking from opposition supporters over the last two decades about their dusty trophy cabinet.

Mikel Arteta asked to compare Arsenal and Tottenham’s season

Jamie O’Hara believes Tottenham have had a better season than Arsenal, given that they have a trophy to show for their efforts.

Even Arsenal legend Paul Merson has said that he would take winning a trophy over finishing in second place in the Premier League (Sky Sports).

When that question was put to Arteta, the Arsenal boss simply batted it away, responding (via Sky Sports): “I don’t like to compare with other teams. I need to analyse my team. That’s my job.”

Tottenham fans will enjoy giving it back to Arsenal fans

It would not be lost on most Spurs fans what the Arsenal fans were saying when the Lilywhites were competing for the Premier League and the Champions League, and falling just short under Mauricio Pochettino.

At the time, despite regularly finishing outside the top four, Arsenal fans insisted that they had been more successful during that spell due to their FA Cup wins.

Tottenham fans will take absolute delight in winding up the Gunners supporters with the same lines all summer. You can bet that chants of “Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that” will be sung loud and proud by the Spurs faithful during the next North London derby.
