Teddy Sheringham refuses to pick winner in Tottenham vs Manchester United Europa League final
Teddy Sheringham has weighed in on the Tottenham Hotspur versus Manchester United Europa League final – and while he predicts goals, he refused to pick a winner.
Tottenham Hotspur are set to take on Manchester United in the final of the UEFA Europa League at San Mames in Spain on Wednesday, 21 May.
This clash would mark the 205th meeting between the two sides, but the first in a European final in their entire existence.
It is 16th-placed Manchester United against 17th-placed Tottenham, in what will be the sixth all-English European final in history.
Both sides have endured wildly inconsistent domestic campaigns, which is precisely why several pundits have struggled to predict who might come out on top.
Teddy Sheringham gives cagey prediction ahead of Tottenham vs Manchester United
Rio Ferdinand has already admitted he could not confidently back either team, pointing to both sides’ erratic form as a reason why he is sitting on the fence.
Former Spurs and Man Utd striker Teddy Sheringham has done the same. While he believes goals are inevitable, he could not commit to backing a winner either.
However, he did suggest that if it goes to penalties, Tottenham may hold the edge due to the pressure that could weigh on Manchester United.
Speaking to Prime Casino, the Tottenham legend said: “I could see there being a lot of goals in the game, because neither team can defend, and neither of them want to play defensively.
“I see a very high-scoring, open game. I am going to predict a 4-3 win, but I do not know which team will edge it. I think either way, it is going to be goals galore and it will be end-to-end stuff.
“If I was looking at this from Manchester United’s point of view, then I would be looking at the weaknesses in the Tottenham defence, but as I said, United’s back four is hardly a tight ship.
“Whoever can be more solid at the back will have an advantage and it might come down to which team makes fewer mistakes, because both sides have got a rick in them.
“If it goes to penalties, I think the pressure will be massively on Manchester United. A shootout could really affect them mentally, with all the implications of the result.”
Spurs need silverware and Champions League return
A lot is on the line for both sides, who need to secure a victory here if they are to get into next season’s UEFA Champions League, given their poor performances in the Premier League.
For Tottenham, it also presents a golden chance to end their 17-year wait for silverware, having last won a major trophy in 2008, when they beat Chelsea in the League Cup final.
Overcoming Manchester United in Spain will not be an easy task, which is why Yves Bissouma has urged his side to stay focused when they take to the pitch.
He said: “If we want to win, we know what we have to do. Let us be focused on that. Let us be the Spurs family. Let us go there and bring this trophy back home.”
