'Not a big thing': Ruben Amorim speaks on Man Utd winning the Europa League vs Tottenham Hotspur
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has said the club should aim higher than winning the Europa League.
The Red Devils have had a poor league campaign, and they have picked up just 39 points from 37 games played.
The club can still make the season successful by beating Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final tomorrow.
The victory would guarantee silverware and a berth in next season’s Champions League campaign.
In an exclusive interview with Guillem Balague on CBS Sports Golazo, Amorim said that winning the Europa League is not a big thing.
The Portuguese tactician added that’s the feeling at the club, and the focus should be on lifting Premier League and Champions League titles.
Amorim believes the Red Devils are so ‘far away’. The Europa League is just one step and not enough for a club of Manchester United’s stature.
He said: “If you win the Europa League in Manchester United. I am really sorry, it is not a big thing.
“You can feel it here. You need to go for Premier League and for Champions League and we are so far away that this is one step.
“That is my feeling. Of course, winning a title, European title, but it’s not enough. I have that feeling all the time. We still want to win it.”
Europa League success key to Man Utd’s progress
United have underperformed in the league throughout the season. Despite a change of manager, their form has been pretty woeful.
The club have accumulated just 24 points from 26 games under Amorim with just six wins. They can still end on a high note with a trophy.
As Amorim said, United should be competing for the Premier League and Champions League. The club are far from doing so. Europa League success is one step towards that.
The club will receive at least £85 million with their entry into the Champions League next term. This should boost the spending spree during the summer transfer window.
United also stand the chance of landing their priority targets. For example, sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres could open the door for a transfer due to Champions League football.
Amorim has repeatedly said that the club should be challenging for bigger trophies, but winning the Europa League will have a big part to play in trying to close the gap on their rivals.
