Ethan Wheatley named alongside Man United target in England squad for Euro U19 tournament

0 2

England will compete at the European U19 Championship next month.

They qualified for the competition in high-flying form, beating Lithuania, Bulgaria, Wales and Portugal, but were held to a draw by Belgium and Turkey.

England have been grouped alongside Norway, Germany and the Netherlands. The top two teams will qualify for the semi-final.

Manager Will Antwi has named his squad for the tournament, which includes Manchester United striker Ethan Wheatley.

The United academy graduate was named alongside Southampton star Tyler Dibling, who has been linked with the Red Devils.

Wheatley featured in three games during the qualifying. He started the victories against Bulgaria and Wales, against whom he scored his first goal for the U19s, and was a substitute against Lithuania.

He will compete for a spot in the starting line-up with Chelsea forward Shim Mheuka, who started most of the games during qualification.

Wheatley is the 250th academy graduate to feature for United’s first team, having come on as a substitute in the 4-2 win over Sheffield United in April 2024.

He has made just one appearance this season, replacing Joshua Zirkzee in the 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the fourth round of the League Cup.

Due to a lack of game time with Ruben Amorim’s side, he was loaned out to League Two outfit Walsall in January but did not make an impression.

His loan was cut short, allowing him to participate in the Premier League 2 play-offs.

The 19-year-old scored three goals before they were knocked out by rivals Manchester City in the semi-final.

Wheatly is highly rated by the club and was given a new deal in March.
