Man United have made a ‘financial offer’ for World Cup-winning star
Argentina World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been tipped to leave Aston Villa this summer.
The 32-year-old has suitors from the Saudi Pro-League (SPL) but would reportedly like to stay in Europe.
Manchester United are interested in the Villa goalkeeper and have made a ‘financial offer’ for him, according to Dsports.
United were close to signing him in 2023, but they signed Andre Onana instead due to his previous working relationship with former manager Erik ten Hag.
Onana has committed several high-profile errors since joining United, sparking talk that he could be replaced.
The Red Devils are reportedly not prioritising a move for a new shot-stopper but would sign one if Onana leaves.
United should not sign Martinez this summer
Man United should not sign Martinez as he is not a clear upgrade on Onana.
He has a 67.9 percent save percentage in the Premier League this season, which is lower than Onana’s 68.9%.
The duo are in the bottom half of the chart of goalkeepers with the most goals prevented in the league this season, which shows that there is little to separate them.
Martinez could also demand a significant rise from his £120,000 weekly salary at Villa, which would affect United’s finances if they do not qualify for the Champions League.
If United intend to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, he should be a clear upgrade on Onana and one that would not break the bank financially.
