Man United tipped to make a move for outstanding Belgian shot-stopper

0 0

Manchester United are reportedly planning on signing a new goalkeeper this summer.

Andre Onana has proven unreliable, making more errors leading to goals than any other goalkeeper for a Premier League club since the start of last season.

Portugal international Diogo Costa is highly rated by United, but they risk losing him to local rivals Manchester City, who want a replacement for Ederson.

The Red Devils could also consider Royal Antwerp goalie Senne Lammens, who has been previously linked with the club.

Journalist Simon Stone has suggested that the Mancunian giants could move for the Belgian this summer, but he doubts he can be their first-choice shot-stopper.

He told BBC: “I really think they hope not to be bringing in another experienced goalkeeper. Tom Heaton will leave when his contract expires in the summer, and it is virtually certain Altay Bayindir will go as well.

“United do have some good young goalkeepers in Elyh Harrison and Hubert Graczyk, but Antwerp’s Senne Lammens is a name I hear quite often, so I wouldn’t be surprised if United go for him.

“However, at 22, with no experience of European competitions and no senior caps, it feels too much of a leap to bring him in as a first choice.

“Lammens has a lot of promise, so if he came in, Amorim could gauge for himself whether the Belgian was good enough.”

Lammens has the potential to rival Onana at United

Lammens is valued at €7.50 million (£6.3m), but Antwerp could demand more as he has two more years left on his contract.

He has been in brilliant form in the Belgian Pro League, keeping 10 clean sheets during the regular season and the play-offs.

Lammens has been the busiest goalkeeper in the division, making 4.5 saves per game and preventing 17.19 goals, a tally only bettered by Anderlecht’s Colin Coosemans.

By contrast, Onana has averaged 2.7 saves per game in the league and has prevented just 0.70 goals.

Lammens is comfortable with the ball at his feet, ranking in the 75th percentile for passing accuracy and the 65th percentile for long passes.

Onana ranks lower, sitting in the 57th and 23rd percentiles for those respective metrics.

Lammens’ stronger numbers in these areas could be influenced by his playing in a league inferior to the Premier League.

Nevertheless, the Belgian has the potential to challenge Onana for the first-choice goalkeeper spot at United.
