Romano has now pointed out that the defender, who has two years left on his contract at N17, is currently not having any conversations with Tottenham Hotspur regarding a new deal.
The Italian transfer guru added that no talks have been planned with the defender’s entourage by Spurs and sees this as a telling sign of what to expect for the Argentine when the transfer window opens.
When asked if Romero is expected to leave Tottenham, Romano told GiveMeSport: “From what I’m hearing, there is no active conversation between Tottenham and Cristian Romero to extend the contract. And that’s the crucial point, I think.
“In this moment, Cristian Romero is not discussing a new deal, and it’s probably also not something they are expecting to do in the next months. So there is a possibility to see movements around Romero.”
Why Romero’s future may not be a foregone conclusion just yet
While it is clear that Diego Simeone’s men and the player want the transfer to go through, that does not mean that striking a deal will be easy for the La Liga side.
It has been widely reported that Tottenham are demanding almost double the fee that Atletico are willing to offer for Romero.
Additionally, some sources indicate that Daniel Levy is not happy with Atletico for making their interest in Romero public, and the Spurs chairman could make the La Liga side pay by making the negotiations very difficult.
