"Big contender": Man Utd plan "ambitious" £84.6m deal for 25yo star if they qualify for UCL - report
Manchester United are planning an ambitious swoop for one of the Premier League’s leading midfielders this summer, according to Corriere dello Sport (page 9).
The Red Devils have had a dismal league campaign, and they are presently 15th in the standings with just 39 points. Despite this, they could end the season on a strong note.
The club have progressed to the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur. Winning the competition will guarantee Champions League football next term.
Corriere dello Sport now claim that the Red Devils could make an ‘ambitious’ move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali if they qualify for the Champions League.
The Italian has been on the radar of Juventus in recent months, but United could become a ‘big contender’ if they are in Europe’s elite club competition next season.
The Red Devils plan to offer £84.6 million to convince the Magpies to part ways with Tonali.
United are unlikely to make a huge outlay on Tonali
The Red Devils have been walking a tightrope when it comes to the Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR), and may require player sales for a big spending spree.
United stand to receive a minimum of £85m with Champions League qualification, but the club still need outgoings to recoup transfer funds for new summer arrivals.
Tonali has been a revelation for the Magpies since returning from a 10-month betting ban. He has made 42 appearances this term, bagging five goals and three assists.
Aside from his goal contributions, the 25-year-old has impressed with his work rate, duel-winning ability and recoveries. Despite this, we don’t see United pursuing a deal.
Casemiro has had a big transformation under manager Ruben Amorim in recent months. The Brazilian star could now stay for the final year of his contract.
United are set to lose Christian Eriksen on a free transfer, but they still have Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Toby Collyer to operate in central midfield.
Bruno Fernandes has also impressed from the number eight role when required. Keeping this in mind, the club are unlikely to spend big on a marquee midfielder.
The club’s main priorities are an elite striker and a playmaker this summer. A centre-back and a deputy goalkeeper could be signed alongside a right wing-back.
In our view, the Tonali speculation could be agent-driven to secure him a new deal at Newcastle.
