Pundit explains why Man United will edge Tottenham to Europa League title
Manchester United booked their place in the Europa League final after beating Athletic Bilbao 4-1 on Thursday to complete a 7-1 aggregate victory.
United will face Tottenham Hotspur in the final in Bilbao on May 21. Spurs defeated Bodo/Glimt to set up an all-English final.
The two teams will finish outside European qualification places in the Premier League and will be desperate to win the competition.
Pundit Steve Nicol believes Man United are favourites to win it based on their experience.
He told ESPN FC: “I will go for United because they have got players involved with the club over the last two or three seasons and have won cups.
“They have a couple of FA Cups in their back pocket, and Tottenham do not have that.
“They have (Cristian) Romero, who has got a World Cup, but in general, this United side turns up in the final, and that is what I am hanging my hat on.
“To try and figure out how they are going to go about it and how they are going to play is impossible because the two teams are not consistent.
Man United must not lose Europa League title to Spurs
United must end their recent struggles against Spurs to win the competition and secure Champions League qualification.
They have not recorded a victory against Tottenham since 2023, losing four of their last five games against them.
Securing a spot in Europe’s premier competition would boost United’s finances and strengthen their chances of landing key transfer targets, such as Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres.
He is also on Arsenal’s radar and would only join United if Champions League football is assured.
A defeat to Spurs will rule United out of European football next season, which would have serious implications for the club’s fragile financial position.
