The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Friday 9th May) - Should Leeds bet on experience with Phillips and Vardy?
Good Morning. It's Friday 9th May, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...
Phillips loan move makes sense
It wouldn't truly feel like a Leeds United summer transfer window without the familiar buzz of former players being linked with a return. It's a recurring theme that often gets fans talking, and this Summer is no different. As anticipated, Kalvin Phillips' name has already surfaced, but this particular rumour feels like it might just have more substance than usual. Speculation is mounting that the former England international could make a return to Elland Road, potentially on a loan deal.
To be frank, bringing Kalvin Phillips back wouldn't necessarily be the worst move Leeds could make right now. While his career trajectory has stalled somewhat over the past two or three seasons, struggling for game time at Manchester City and during loan spells at West Ham and Ipswich, a return to his boyhood club and familiar surroundings at Elland Road could be the catalyst he needs to reignite his career. Crucially, multiple sources suggest that Phillips himself is keen on the idea and genuinely wants to come back.
Following his return to Manchester City from relegated Ipswich, and with Rodri firmly established in Pep Guardiola's midfield, Phillips is widely expected to be surplus to requirements at the Etihad. This opens the door for a potential move. Transfer expert Graeme Bailey recently shared insights with LeedsUnited.News, reinforcing the growing belief that Phillips is eyeing a return to West Yorkshire on loan.
The prospect of Phillips returning, even temporarily, offers clear benefits. Leeds would acquire a player with undeniable quality and a deep connection to the club and its fanbase, potentially boosting the midfield significantly. For Phillips, it's a chance to escape a frustrating period, gain vital minutes, and rediscover his best form in an environment where he is loved and understood. While not a done deal yet, the stars seem to be aligning for a potentially significant Elland Road comeback story.
Leeds are looking at the Phillips situation intently. He wants to come back. It won’t be a permanent deal, I think it’s the perfect opportunity for Leeds . Leeds should do everything they can to bring him back. He could be extraordinarily good. He’s still a very good Premier League player. He’s made some wrong decisions, he should have gone to Newcastle but I’d be surprised if they decide not to bring Phillips back. He is one of Leeds top targets this window, loan with an option. Leeds will have no issue matching what Ipswich are paying . My understanding is he wants to come back, Leeds want him. I think it gets done.
Vardy twelve month deal?
Leicester City icon Jamie Vardy is set to embark on a new chapter in his illustrious career. At 38 years old, the veteran striker has confirmed he will be leaving the King Power Stadium at the end of his contract this Summer, bringing an end to a remarkable 13-year spell with the Foxes.
With his time at Leicester drawing to a close, Vardy's representatives are already actively working to secure his next destination. As is common practice when a high-profile player becomes available, agents reach out to potential suitors across the footballing landscape. One club reportedly contacted is Leeds United. Whilst his best days are behind him, his experience, positional play and eye for goal should not be ignored.
He's netted eight goals and provided three assists during 2670 minutes of game time for a very poor Leicester City side this season. If Leeds are able to offload Patrick Bamford this Summer, than surely Vardy is a better option, especially as a freebee?
FA investigating Ampadu over parade chant
Leeds skipper Ethan Ampadu is reportedly under investigation by the Football Association (FA) following an incident during the club's open-top bus parade through the city centre on Monday. The Welsh international was a central figure in the celebrations marking Leeds' promotion back to the Premier League. However, attention has now turned to a moment during the parade where Ampadu is alleged to have led fans in the infamous chant about teammate Wilfred Gnonto. The chant in question has been described as "crude" and has previously drawn significant criticism throughout the season. It gained notoriety and condemnation from anti-discriminatory groups, including 'Kick It Out', earlier in the campaign due to its nature.
According to a report in 'The Telegraph', the governing body is aware of video footage circulating from the parade which captures the incident. The newspaper states that the FA will now look into the matter. While the specific grounds for the investigation have not been detailed, the FA's rules cover conduct that brings the game into disrepute. The controversy surrounding the chant earlier in the season suggests it could potentially fall under this category, especially given its public nature during a major club event.
As captain, Ampadu holds a prominent position at the club and his conduct is subject to scrutiny. The FA's review of the footage will likely assess whether the player's actions breached any regulations. At this stage, the investigation is understood to be in its initial phases, with the FA reviewing the available evidence. It remains to be seen what, if any, action the governing body may decide to take following their inquiry into the matter. Leeds United have not yet publicly commented on the report.
