Red Sox Teammate Offers Support After ‘Horrible’ Triston Casas Injury

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas suffered a “significant” injury Friday.

Casas, trying to beat out a slow roller to the right of the mound, tumbled to the dirt as he reached first base, immediately grabbing his left knee. Red Sox manager Alex Cora immediately tended to him alongside members of the training staff, before a cart and stretcher were brought into the field to assist him off the field

It’s the kind of scene you’d only typically see at a football or rugby game, which is what made it all the more jarring for his teammates.

“Horrible,” Alex Bregman said following the game, as seen on NESN. “Obviously, we’re all thinking about him and hoping for the best. Great teammate, and you hate to see that happen. We’re all thinking about him right now.”

Bregman, who helped lead the way offensively in a victory over the Minnesota Twins, found it difficult to focus on the game after the jarring scene.

“It’s tough,” Bregman said. “We’re a big family in here that comes to the ballpark every single day together, and to see one of your guys go down like that, it’s really tough.”

Casas was clearly in shock regarding the incident, wearing an unexpressive look as he was loaded onto the cart and taken off the field — even flashing a small smile to a Fenway Park attendant as he was rolled off the warning track.

“(We were all) just in shock,” Cora said. “You don’t expect that. And when you see the card, that’s when you (realize), ‘Oh…this is more than a twisted ankle’ or something like that.”

Cora said postgame that the organization would provide further updates Saturday. It’s unlikely they find a full-time replacement any time soon, but the expectation is that more versatile depth will be added to the active roster in the meantime. Vaughn Grissom and Nick Sogard are the two likeliest candidates to receive the call in Casas’ absence.

The Red Sox and Twins return to the field at 4:10 p.m. ET on Saturday. NESN has full coverage, beginning an hour prior to first pitch.
