Red Sox Reportedly Have ‘No Plans’ To Follow Popular Theory
The Boston Red Sox have zero interest in changing the development plans of Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony.
The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier reported as much on Saturday, stating there were no plans for the organization to introduce first base to anyone playing in Triple-A Worcester — Mayer and Anthony included.
Boston, of course, finds itself in a sticky situation regarding the position, as Triston Casas went down with a knee injury during Friday night’s victory over the Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park. Red Sox manager Alex Cora didn’t have any concrete updates following the game, but did call it “significant” in his media availability.
Who will replace him if not for Mayer and Anthony?
NESN has already put together shortlists for internal and external options, but the most likely ones seem to be in the organization. Vaughn Grissom, for instance, was already getting work at the position this season, while Nick Sogard and Abraham Toro have each proven themselves capable of holding down the spot for extended periods.
Rafael Devers and Connor Wong feel like potential options should this be a long-term issue, but there hasn’t been much chatter on that front from the club. The Red Sox are just making it abundantly clear who the replacements aren’t.
