How ESPN Graded April Performance For Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox hovered around the .500 mark in the first month of the season, while they sit just two games out of first place in the American League East.

The ballclub showed several flashes of why the group can be special this year, particularly with the spark of a capable offense and excellent pitching from the new ace of the staff. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, those factors coincided with continued poor defense and bullpen letdowns from the previous two seasons. Inconsistencies left Boston at this point, though it’s obviously still fairly early in the season.

ESPN’s David Schoenfield handed out grades for all 30 MLB teams from April and assigned a B-minus to the Red Sox.

“The Red Sox were sort of everyone’s favorite sleeper pick to win the AL East, although it wouldn’t be exactly right to call them a deep sleeper,” Schoenfield wrote. “The four key newcomers have been good to outstanding so far: Garrett Crochet looks like a Cy Young contender, Alex Bregman is hitting like it’s 2019 all over again, Walker Buehler is 4-1, and rookie second baseman Kristian Campbell already looks like an All-Star.”

May marks a new opportunity for the Red Sox to soar and break free from the deficiencies that plagued the last three seasons and embrace the new improvements to the club.
