Red Sox Rumors: Short-Term Move Makes Room For Veteran
Lucas Giolito will finally make an appearance for the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.
Boston activated the right-handed starter from the injured list just hours before what is expected to be his first start since 2023 against the Toronto Blue Jays, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. The Red Sox made room on the active roster by placing relief pitcher Brennan Bernardino on the bereavement list, per Cotillo.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora hinted at the move Tuesday. Bernardino will be eligible to return Saturday and must be returned to the active roster by next Wednesday.
Giolito will make his debut after signing a two-year contract in December 2023. Boston hasn’t received a good return on that investment, as he spent the entire first season on the injured list after undergoing an internal brace procedure to repair an elbow injury he suffered in spring training. Giolito then suffered a left hamstring strain during his first spring training start, which put him on the IL until Wednesday.
The Red Sox hope he can turn things around against the struggling Blue Jays, who have won just one of their last nine games. NESN will have full coverage starting at 6 p.m. ET.
