Paul Merson disagrees with Carragher about Tottenham’s Europa League chances
Paul Merson has said who he feels is more likely to be crowned Europa League champions between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, with the former Arsenal man disagreeing with the assessment of his fellow Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Carragher.
While Tottenham Hotspur still have Premier League games this season, it is fair to say that Ange Postecoglou will be more focused on the Europa League semifinal against Bodo/Glimt.
Spurs are favourites to overcome the Norwegian side to progress to their first European final since 2019.
Opta’s SuperComputer has installed Tottenham as the favourite to lift the Europa League, partly because they have the easier passage to the final, but beating Man United or Athletic Club Bilbao in the final will be a different matter altogether.
Paul Merson tips Tottenham for Europa League win
Speaking on the Overlap a few days ago, Jamie Carragher said there was no chance Tottenham will beat Man United in the Europa League final.
The former Liverpool man insisted that, given the history and the mentality of the two clubs, there was only going to be one winner if both English clubs progress to the final.
However, Merson fancies Tottenham getting their hands on the trophy over the Red Devils, although he admitted that Bilbao would be difficult to overcome in the final at home.
Merson told Sportskeeda: “If I had to pick an English team to win the Europa League now, it would still be Tottenham. Athletic Club will be a massive challenge for Manchester United. The fact that the final will be held in Bilbao is added motivation for the La Liga club.”
Who would Ange Postecoglou prefer to face in the final?
While beating Bilbao at home will be a very difficult task in the final, there will be a different sort of pressure involved for Tottenham if it is an all-English affair.
One suspects that Postecoglou would still prefer to face the Manchester club in the final, but he will first be keen to ensure that his side gets there rather than looking too far ahead.
Bodo/Glimt have already taken some big scalps in this year’s competition and Spurs need to bring their A-game to seal progression to the showpiece event in San Mames.
