Jamie Carragher predicts Europa League winner if Tottenham face Man United
Jamie Carragher has revealed exactly who he thinks would come out on top if Tottenham were to meet Manchester United in the Europa League final.
Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles in the Premier League this season have been well documented, with the North London side currently sat 16th in the table.
However, Manchester United haven’t fared much better either, as the Red Devils also find themselves languishing in the bottom half, with just a single point separating them from Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Despite their poor domestic form, both clubs have had a better time of it in Europe and now find themselves just three games away from lifting silverware.
Jamie Carragher backs Manchester United to beat Tottenham in Europa League final
If both sides navigate their semi-final ties, with Tottenham due to face Bodo/Glimt and Manchester United going up against Athletic Club, we’d be in for an all-English final.
Spurs would go in with a bit of confidence, having already beaten United three times this season. But Jamie Carragher doesn’t see it that way.
Speaking on The Overlap, he made his stance clear – he reckons Tottenham get to the final, but fall short.
Carragher doesn’t think they’d get past Athletic Club in their own ground, and even if it’s United in the final, he’s still not backing Spurs.
“I mean, I can’t see Tottenham winning the trophy just for the fact, I can see you getting to the final, but I can’t see you beating Bilbao in their own stadium,” Carragher said.
“I think that’d be tough for anybody. There’s no way Tottenham beat Man United in a European final, no chance, history, mentality, they’re just a club who find a way to win. Man United have an ability to win games they shouldn’t.”
Spurs backed by supercomputer in Europa League predictions
Now, while Carragher is tipping Manchester United to lift the trophy, the numbers seem to tell a different story altogether.
A supercomputer, which ran 10,000 simulations of the competition ahead of next month’s semi-finals, has installed Tottenham Hotspur as favourites to go all the way.
According to the model, Spurs have a 66.6 per cent chance of reaching the Europa League final and a 34.9 per cent chance of winning it.
Athletic Club, who would be playing the final on home soil should they beat United, are next in line with a 28.5 per cent chance of glory.
Manchester United come in just behind that, with their chances rated at 24.2 per cent, while Tottenham’s semi-final opponents, Bodo/Glimt, are the outsiders with a 12.4 per cent shot at pulling off a shock.
We’d have to wait and see who comes out on top with their predictions. But it is fair to say, it is a hard one to call.
