Ange Postecoglou reveals how Pedro Porro has defied Tottenham injury crisis

0 1

Ange Postecoglou has revealed how Pedro Porro has managed to stay injury-free so far this campaign, despite his Tottenham teammate’s injury struggles.

Earlier this season, an injury crisis ravaged the Tottenham Hotspur squad, with players dropping like flies. In fact, at one point, there were 12 first-team players out injured, which naturally had a knock-on effect on the team’s form.

That chaotic period is one of the reasons Spurs have struggled to build momentum and now find themselves languishing in 16th place.

Yet, while most of the Tottenham squad have had at least one spell on the sidelines, one player has remained untouched by the injury curse – Pedro Porro.

Pedro Porro defies injury odds in relentless Tottenham season

At the time of writing, Pedro Porro has featured in the squad 52 times this season, played 46 games, and clocked up a staggering 3,712 minutes – more than any other Spurs player.

This has allowed the full-back to be a mainstay in the Spurs backline. Ange Postecoglou was recently asked what Porro is doing differently to keep himself available week in, week out.

The Tottenham boss credited the right-back for his professionalism, both on and off the pitch, calling him a “pro”.

Speaking to football.london, he said: “He’s a pro, he looks after himself, he does everything right on and off the field, but also he’s got the type of body that is resilient to the amount of intensity and game-time he’s had. It is a credit to him.

“It is not just that he’s playing, he has kept to a really good level all year and has been a mainstay for us in a defence where I hate to think of how many defensive partners he’s played with.

“Four goalkeepers and upwards of 10 different defenders that he’s played alongside, he’s kind of been a constant. He’s been brilliant for us.

“From the moment I arrived he’s got a great personality, got great enthusiasm and passion for the game. I think that is why he gets the most out of himself all the time.”

Spurs’ backline consistency returns as Europa League semi-final awaits

As Ange Postecoglou mentioned, Pedro Porro has been a fixture in a backline that’s been torn apart and stitched back together more times than anyone would’ve liked this season.

But in the win over Frankfurt, we finally saw the familiar defensive unit of Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie and Porro reunited – and Spurs promptly kept a clean sheet to secure their spot in the Europa League semi-final.

Going forward, Porro has been just as effective, chipping in with eight assists and three goals already this season. With the entire backline now fit, it’d be interesting to see if they can lead this club to Europa League glory.
