Why Tottenham may be forced to reduce Cristian Romero asking price
A report from Argentina has provided the latest on Atletico Madrid’s pursuit of Cristian Romero, explaining why the La Liga side may be able to sign the Tottenham defender for a fee which is well short of the North London club’s asking price.
It has been widely reported over the last few weeks that Romero wants to leave Tottenham this summer to join Atletico Madrid, which the centre-back appeared to confirm earlier this week in an interview, where Romero expressed a desire to experience football in La Liga.
The centre-back has just two years left on his contract at the North London club, but Spurs are not expected to make it easy to move to the Spanish capital.
In fact, it was reported a couple of days ago that Tottenham are ready to demand £60m for Romero, a fee which is thought to be considered excessive by Atletico.
Cristian Romero may push through Atletico Madrid transfer
According to a new report in TyC Sports, the centre-back is unhappy at Spurs, with Atletico now showing ‘serious’ interest in taking him to Spain.
The report says that Romero has spoken to Diego Simeone and wants to move to the Wanda Metropolitan Stadium this summer, but Tottenham value the player at €75m (£64.1m).
It is explained that Simeone has still not convinced the Atletico hierarchy to pay that kind of fee for the World Cup winner.
Instead, it is suggested that the Tottenham vice-captain can push for an exit if Atletico make an offer and the player’s discontent could force the Lilywhites to lower their asking price.
Will Daniel Levy hold firm in negotiations?
We know that the Tottenham chairman is among the toughest negotiators going around and he is not one to succumb to the tactics of player agitation.
However, given that Romero has only two years left on his contract, this summer might be the final transfer window during which Spurs can get a decent fee for him.
The only other possible course of action is to perhaps keep the centre-back at the club against his wishes and hopes that he changes his mind if Tottenham improve next season, which will be a risky strategy for multiple reasons.
