'We understand': David Ornstein says 25-year-old star 'wants to join' Manchester United

Manchester United could make multiple additions to their squad during the summer transfer window.

An attacking midfielder will likely be prioritised. United have already identified their top target.

Initial contact has been made for Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha.

Journalist David Ornstein has now revealed that United are in a strong position to sign the Brazilian.

He added that Cunha also ‘wants to join’ the Red Devils, but the club still need to agree personal terms.

There is an expectation that things could develop rapidly amid competition from other clubs.

In a Q&A session on The Athletic, Ornstein said: “Let’s see if anything changes that, but the reporting to date has been fairly accurate and Man Utd are in a strong position.

“We understand Cunha wants to join Utd but they will need to agree personal terms and, if that happens, trigger the release clause once it becomes active.

“I’m not aware of any contact with Wolves yet but that is not necessary at this point. So it’s technically not “close” yet – but there is an expectation it could well develop pretty rapidly.”

United in pole position to land Cunha

The 25-year-old has developed into one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League.

Cunha started his career as a specialist striker, but he has excelled in the number 10 role at Wolves.

He has managed 16 goals and four assists from just 31 appearances for the Midlands outfit this term.

His statistics should probably be higher, considering he has created 12 big chances in the league alone.

In our view, he would be a perfect partner for Bruno Fernandes in the attacking midfield department.

Cunha is strong with his dribbling skills and has the knack for winning ground and aerial duels.

He has a tireless work rate and seems ideally suited for the playing style under manager Ruben Amorim.

Cunha has a £62.5 million release clause in his contract, but United aim to pay the fee in instalments.

United could form a dream attack next season if they can land a marquee goalscoring striker to partner Cunha and Fernandes.
