Tottenham receive potential blow as Man United steal march on early striker talks
Fabrizio Romano has just handed Tottenham Hotspur a double blow in their pursuit of Matheus Cunha as the journalist reveals the latest developments in the race for the Wolves striker.
Cunha has emerged as one of the best strikers in the Premier League since arriving at Molineux Stadium in 2023 from Atletico Madrid.
Given the fact that several top sides in the division are on the lookout for a number nine, he has unsurprisingly emerged as one of the most sought-after players ahead of the summer window.
Spurs are thought to be one of the clubs eyeing the forward, with several outlets claiming over the last few months that Tottenham are considering activating Cunha’s £62m release clause.
However, the Lilywhites are now at the risk of missing out on the Wolves man after a Premier League rival stepped up their pursuit of the player.
Man United making progress in effort to sign Matheus Cunha
Fabrizio Romano has now taken to social media to reveal that Man United have now moved to the front of the queue to land Matheus Cunha this summer.
He explained that negotiations are now ongoing between the parties, with the Red Devils ready to pay the striker’s release clause.
In a separate update, Romano subsequently also revealed how United’s initial conversations with the 25-year-old had gone.
The journalist stated that the feelings among both parties are now positive after the Manchester club presented their project to the player.
However, Romano made it clear that the deal is not done just yet and that more meetings will be required before Ruben Amorim’s side wins the race for the Wolves man.
Why Tottenham should not give up on Matheus Cunha race
If Cunha is open to moving to Man United, there is no reason he will not consider a switch to Spurs, as the Red Devils have had just as poor a season as the Lilywhites.
Tottenham may even have an advantage over Amorim’s men if they win the Europa League and secure Champions League qualification.
One would expect the striker to wait until the summer to make a decision on his future and one would hope that we have not seen the last of Spurs’ advances for Cunha.
