£64m star 'keen on joining' Man City, he was the 'preferred' transfer choice of Man United

Manchester United have suffered a big setback ahead of the summer transfer window.

United are planning to sign a new goalkeeper after inconsistent performances from Andre Onana.

Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa was reportedly the “preferred” choice to replace Onana in the summer.

According to journalist Santi Aouna, Diogo Costa has now given initial green light to Manchester City.

He is “keen on joining” the Cityzens to play under Pep Guardiola.

With Ederson’s future uncertain following interest from Saudi Arabia last summer, City appear poised to pounce.

Costa has shone for both Porto and Portugal.

He is under contract until 2027 and has a hefty £64 million release clause.

Onana has underwhelmed since arriving in 2023, with shot-stopping errors often overshadowing his technical ability.

Signed by former manager Erik ten Hag to build from the back, Onana has struggled to replicate his Ajax and Inter Milan form.

Costly mistakes in last season’s Champions League campaign contributed heavily to United’s early group stage exit.

After a strong first half of the 2024–25 campaign, Onana’s form has taken a massive dip in recent months.

United head coach Ruben Amorim dropped him for the Premier League clash against Newcastle United following his mistakes against Lyon in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final.

Costa would have been a clear upgrade, but matching his release clause was always going to be a tall order for United.

Now, with Costa seemingly Etihad-bound, United can only hope this missed transfer does not come back to haunt them.
