Man Utd boss & execs want £63m forward this summer, boost as positive contract talks held after what Amorim was spotted doing
Manchester United have held positive contract talks to sign versatile Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Matheus Cunha during the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic.
Man United head coach Ruben Amorim, who praised the 25-year-old Brazilian before the game and was seen greeting him in the tunnel after the match, wants him at the Old Trafford club, and his bosses are on the same page with him on the transfer decision.
However, the Red Devils will have to activate the £62.5 million ($83.7m) release clause in Cunha’s contract if they want to land him, and they are ready to sell players who are out of favour under the Portuguese to fund the move.
The likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia could all be sold for the Brazilian, and while Wolves would expect payment in full there is scope for instalments.
Man United see Cunha as a player at his peak and one capable of making an instant impact in their attack following an underwhelming return of goals so far in 2024-25.
Given that the former Atletico Madrid star plays in the No. 10 role for Wolves in the same 3-4-2-1 formation Amorim deploys, he will be perfect to play behind the No. 9 at Man United and his numbers speak volumes.
Cunha has 16 goals and four assists in 31 games so far this term after ending last season with 14 goals and eight assists in 36 appearances.
He can also play on both wings and as the main striker, and Amorim could do with such an attacker within his ranks as he looks to hit the ground running in his first full season in charge.
While Man United are now taking the first steps in attempting to find an agreement on personal terms for the Brazil international, they may need to qualify for the Champions League next season to have a chance of pipping other suitors to his services.
They face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals of the Europa League and will hope to win the competition so as to play with the big boys next term and boost their chances of landing top targets in the transfer market.
