Ange Postecoglou secures his Tottenham job for now after immediate sack rumours
Ange Postecoglou reportedly came dangerously close to losing his job this week, but the Tottenham head coach will now live to fight on for at least a few more weeks after guiding the Lilywhites into the semifinals of the Europa League.
Ahead of the second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt, various reports indicated that Tottenham could sack Ange Postecoglou as soon as they are eliminated from the Europa League.
That seemed like a likely possibility heading into Thursday, given Eintracht’s formidable record at home. In fact, some Spurs fans might have been wondering why the club had not already replaced the Australian ahead of the Europa League quarterfinal.
However, Daniel Levy and the club’s hierarchy held their nerve, and they have been rewarded, with the 59-year-old guiding the Lilywhites to their first European semifinal since 2019.
Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham job is safe for a while
At Deutsche Bank Park, Tottenham Hotspur showed a side to them that they have not too frequently under the current managerial regime, digging deep and putting bodies on the line to emerge with a hard-fought 1-0 win.
The performance and the result have put a temporary break on the speculation over Postecoglou’s future, with the club’s dream of lifting the Europa League now starting to become very realistic.
The Australian has now earned a shot to lead the team into the two semifinal clashes against Bodo/Glimt at the start of May as Spurs look to book a place in the final in Bilbao.
After his side’s win at Frankfurt, Postecoglou hit back at those who laughed at him for his second-season trophy comments, pointing out that the club’s dream of lifting silverware is still very much alive and kicking.
Will Postecoglou stay at Spurs if he wins the Europa League?
While this result against Frankfurt might have ensured that the Australian coach sees out the rest of the season, there remains a big question mark over his future at the club beyond the end of the campaign.
It has been widely reported that Tottenham could sack Ange Postecoglou even if they win the Europa League, given the team’s continued struggles in the league.
However, the Australian will be able to walk away with his head held high if he does lift the trophy, as he would have achieved something that big names like Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte had failed to do at Spurs.
