WooSox Use Top Red Sox Prospect To Send Cheeky Message
The loudest voices on social media want a top Boston Red Sox prospect to play first base, and it seems like Triple-A Worcester caught wind of the noise.
Roman Anthony started off hot for the WooSox, and it led to an outcry of fans wanting the 20-year-old called up to the majors. There are logical reasons why it’s too soon for a move that likely is going to happen later in the season. But sports fans, especially the Fenway Faithful, aren’t known for their patience.
That’s why there’s been a call for Anthony to be called up to play first base, a position he’s never played in his pro career. But as we know from “Moneyball,” it’s very easy to play first base.
No one from the Red Sox organization entertained the idea, but Triple-A Worcester’s social media raised eyebrows Saturday when it posted a clip of Anthony working ground ball drills. Did it happen? Did manager Chad Tracy start Anthony at first? Of course, not.
“Some pics of our outfielders from 2024 taking this drill,” the WooSox posted on X, along with a winking emoji.
There you have it. Worcester was just having some fun, and Anthony started at designated hitter Saturday.
However, knowing how social media and talk radio work, the call for Anthony to switch positions might not quiet down even after Saturday.
