The R’s got off to a decent start, enjoying good possession and forcing a couple of corners in the first 15 minutes.
But it was the visitors who produced the first strike at goal when the ball was deflected behind for a corner.
The Cherries began to up their game and took the lead with 26 minutes played after the R’s had lost possession just outside the penalty area. This led to Zane Okoro slotting the ball into the net.
The visitors doubled their lead nine minutes later when Daniel Adu-Adjei ran through the middle into the box, before leaning to his left and shooting beyond Joel Halliday.
At the other end, Kieran Petrie had his effort block and with the sun poking through and the odd spots of rain, at half-time, it remained 0-2 to the Cherries.
Bournemouth added a third goal just a couple of minutes after the interval, when Daniel Adu-Adjei rounded the trialist centre-back and continued to pick his spot.
Mr Hathway booked Charlie Osborne, after the Cherries captain had caught Emmerson Sutton’s ankle. The free kick from just outside the box came to nothing.
Kieran Petrie’s low shot from a widish position, was well-saved by Callum McKenna at the near post.
Paul Furlong made his first change around the hour mark when he brought on Harry Murphy at the expense of Fraser Neill.
A cross over to Archie O’Brien saw the R’s No.10 head the ball over the crossbar.
The Cherries increased their lead after 64 minutes following substitute Kian Tydeman’s overhead kick.
A minute or so later, Casey Shann replaced the Rangers trialist.
As the R’s looked to pull a goal back, Callum McKenna went down to grab Archie O’Brien’s drive from just outside the box.
Then, Harry Murphy let fly from 25-odd yards, which ended up going behind for a corner.
After Michael Dacosta Gonzalez was forced off with an injury, the visitors had to play the final stages with ten men.
In the 77th minute after Rocco Friel had his shirt pulled in the penalty area, Mr Hathway pointed to the spot. Harry Murphy stepped up and although Callum McKenna got his left-hand to the ball, he couldn’t keep it out.
After Rocco Friel was shown a yellow card, a nice one-two between Kieran Petrie and Harry Murphy led to the latter shooting over the bar.
Bournemouth’s Max Kinsey was booked close to the final whistle.
Paul Furlong’s side then went on to face Watford at Loftus Road.
