Peter Hook and the Light (1 reply)

Thursday night I travelled to Bristol and to The Marble Factory, (I wonder what they made there!), to see Peter Hook and the Light live.
For those unaware, Hooky was the bassist in Joy Division and New Order. His band re-create the music from those two bands. It would be harsh to call the band a tribute act.

I never got to see either of them, so was looking forward to this. The venue, a typically red brick large building with a high roof - did give me some concerns about acoustics, I needn’t have worried. I had heard mixed reports, that sometimes Hooky goes through the motions, so hoped that last night wouldn’t have been one of those. Again, I needn’t have worried. The tour was set up as the Get Ready tour. Get Ready was New Order’s 7th album released 8 years after Republic. It has 10 tracks, and received mixed reviews.

The band came on stage at 20.00 on the dot and we were straight into it. The album was performed in order, with energy and vigour. The lighting, despite being reasonably minimal, was effective. The additional bassist, Hooky’s son, with Hook himself, gave the driving energy that these dance songs need. The lead guitarist, David Potts, was excellent. He also provided some lead vocals too. Several of the band were in Monaco, a previous Peter Hook “combo!”

All 10 tracks of the album were played, but to finish the first half we had two additional tracks. Firstly Brutal which featured on the soundtrack for The Beach. This track along with Primitive Notion, were the stand out performances of the first set. The set closed with Here to Stay which was a rejected track from the original album.

After the break, which wasn’t long, we were into a Joy Division and New Order “best of!” What a phenomenal set this was.

Firstly Joy Division. Dead Souls, Digital, Disorder, Isolation, New Dawn Fades, She’s Lost Control, Shadow Play and finally Transmission. What a brilliant choice of tracks.

Then it was New Order. The wonderful Ceremony, Sun Rise, Love Vigilantes, Regret, What Do You Want From Me, and Vanishing Point. There was an amusing interlude in What Do You Want, where David made a mistake in the song. They stopped, had a laugh, and re-started with verse 2!
Then I couldn’t have asked for the set to be concluded any better, with my 4 favourite New Order Tracks The Perfect Kiss, (superb audience participation in that one), True Faith, Temptation, Blue Monday and finally - somewhat predictably, love Will Tear Us Apart, the Joy Division classic. (Which Hooky dedicated to him mum!)

We were done. No encore, but no complaints. We had just short of 3 hours of music. What a terrific night.
