Tottenham fans change their tune on Cristian Romero after ‘captain’ performance
Tottenham Hotspur fans have been quick to give Cristian Romero his flowers after his standout performance against Eintracht Frankfurt, praising his 10/10 display.
For all of the heartache Tottenham Hotspur have caused their fans this season, Thursday’s result was a much-needed breather.
A 1-0 win away to Eintracht Frankfurt at a bouncing Deutsche Bank Park is the sort of result few would’ve predicted, especially considering Spurs’ recent struggles.
It wasn’t just the win that impressed, but the manner of it – the way Tottenham went about their business, staying calm and composed even when Frankfurt tried to crank up the pressure, was proper.
Romero praised for proper captain performance in Frankfurt win
It was a mature and controlled display from Spurs – a proper coming-of-age performance – and one they’ll need to replicate if there’s to be any hope of going all the way in this competition.
At the heart of Tottenham’s defensive masterclass was Cristian Romero. The Argentine centre-back was rock solid for the full ninety minutes against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Tottenham fans, who didn’t hold back after Romero’s nightmare showing against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out, were quick to change their tune and shower him with praise.
Social media was full of praise with reactions to his performance. One fan wrote: “He was outstanding not only defensively but as a leader as well.” Another said: “One of the best centre-back performances I’ve seen – definitely his best for us. We can’t afford to lose him.”
There was more praise, with one supporter commenting: “Amazing, huge, almost perfect! Love how he pocketed Ekitike tonight. That’s a proper captain’s performance! Please keep this up!”
Another added: “Colossus… a top, top defender, our best by a fair bit. Wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a big move in the summer.”
One fan summed it up bluntly: “That performance has just put another £5 million on his selling price.”
Cristian Romero must now find consistency for Tottenham
Of course, the centre-back was class on the night, and Cristian Romero rightly earned a 9/10 in our Tottenham player ratings column for his display against Eintracht Frankfurt.
However, as good as he is, consistency has always been the question mark. There’s no doubt he’s got the quality to put in showings like this, but the odd lapse or rash moment has cost Tottenham at times this season.
If he can cut that out, though, we’re talking about one of the very best centre-backs in world football. If he is to leave Spurs this summer, then at least go out on a high and help bring some silverware back to north London, Cristian.
