Opinion: Heung-min Son should have travelled with Tottenham to Frankfurt as a captain

0 6

Heung-min Son has picked up a knock and is ruled out for Thursday, with the Tottenham captain not even travelling with the squad – the big question is why?

It is only going to get bigger in the Europa League from here on for Tottenham Hotspur if they manage to get past Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night.

However, that is going to be a difficult thing for the Lilywhites to achieve, given Eintracht Frankfurt’s home record, which sees the German side unbeaten at their stadium.

Tottenham definitely need all the hands they can get, and Ange Postecoglou has been receiving positive news on that front.

Dejan Kulusevski has returned to fitness following his foot problem, while Kevin Danso was also spotted in training ahead of the Frankfurt clash and is expected to feature on the bench.

Heung-min Son ruled out for Spurs vs Frankfurt

Richarlison, who had been out for an extended period, has been gradually eased back in and managed to get a solid 15 minutes under his belt in Tottenham’s last Premier League outing against Wolves.

And while these are welcome returns for Postecoglou, the Spurs boss was also handed a blow, as he revealed that club captain Heung-min Son is still nursing a foot injury and will not feature against Frankfurt.

While that is a big blow, we do believe there are five players in the squad who can step up and do a job in the Son’s absence.

From a tactical point of view, Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff should be able to find solutions without Son on the pitch. But from a leadership standpoint, there’s a clear gap – the Tottenham captain has not even travelled with the squad.

Tottenham captain Heung-min Son could be missing off the pitch too

Thursday’s clash is the biggest one for Spurs right now. I mean, it feels like the entire 2024/25 season hangs on the outcome of this one game.

And with Son injured and unable to help on the pitch, he could still play a part off it – in the dressing room, in team talks, simply by being there for the squad.

His presence could make a difference, it might just give the players that extra push. But with Son not travelling to Germany, one can only wonder why.

He’s the captain, and wearing that armband comes with responsibility. You don’t just sit back while your team goes into battle.

We’ve seen how powerful it can be to have that emotional captain figure in modern football – Messi with Argentina, Ronaldo with Portugal. Their presence alone meant something.

You’d hope that even though Heung-min Son didn’t travel with the Tottenham squad, he still finds a way to be present for the players.

Because, let’s be real – if Tottenham lose, that’s it. Curtains for the season. Nothing left to play for. You could say pride, but judging by some of these league performances, you do start to wonder if this group even knows what pride looks like.

Tottenham definitely need all the help they can get on Thursday against Eintracht Frankfurt, and Son’s presence off the pitch could make a difference.
