Man United U21s escape defeat in final Premier League 2 regular season fixture

0 3

Manchester United drew 1-1 with Wolverhampton Wanderers in their final game of the Premier League 2 regular season on Monday evening at Aggborough Stadium.

Forward Gabriel Biancheri should have opened the scoring in the seventh minute but headed over from a corner.

The hosts nearly took the lead through Dani Angel, but his effort was blocked, and Luke Rawlings’s subsequent attempt drifted wide.

Defender Sam Murray squandered a chance to get on the scoresheet for United, while striker Chido Obi and midfielder James Scanlon also saw their efforts blocked.

Goalkeeper Elyh Harrison then produced a fantastic save to deny Angel from giving Wolves the lead.

Sam Edozie eventually broke the deadlock a minute before halftime, curling a free-kick into the bottom right corner to put the hosts ahead.

United responded well after the break. Goalkeeper Joshua Gracey saved Obi’s effort before Tyler Fletcher equalised for Travis Binnion’s side in the 52nd minute.

The Red Devils continued to push for a winner—Sekou Kone’s shot whistled past the left post, and Gracey saved another attempt from Scanlon.

Wolves threatened to regain the lead through centre-back Justin Hubner and substitute Fletcher Holman, but neither could seriously trouble Harrison.

Substitute Amir Ibragimov failed to hit the target from Obi’s cross, and United were forced to settle for a draw in their final regular season match.

The Red Devils finished fifth and will face the 12th-placed team in the first round of the play-offs.

Everton currently occupy that position, but they could be displaced by rivals Liverpool who have a game in hand.

Having won just two of their last five league games, United must shake off their poor form to stand a chance of winning the play-offs.
