Exclusive: Injury expert reveals how individual training works for Tottenham stars
Tottenham Hotspur have had their issues with injury-prone players over the years, and one injury expert believes it could be down to a mixture of bad luck and poor judgement.
Spurs fans know the pattern all too well. Scout an exciting new player with no record of any injuries, sign the player for big money, and then watch them pick up one problem after the next.
Erik Lamela is perhaps the most infamous example of this Tottenham curse, while the likes of Richarlison and Micky Van de Ven in the current squad are also struggling to consistently stay fit.
Biomechanics expert Dr Ben Rosenblatt recently advised that Tottenham should develop an individual training program for Van de Ven to support his unique style of play.
Van de Ven revealed himself that he has received specialist help at Spurs. The centre-back is attempting to change his running style and complete individual training exercises to reduce the risk of a reoccurring problem.
Spurs physios were even seen massaging Van de Ven’s hamstrings on the touchline before he made his long-awaited return from injury earlier this year.
Tottenham need to treat their injury-prone players individually
It appears individual work is now just as important a part of the modern game as team training.
Dr. Rajpal Brar – a doctor of physical therapy – exclusively told the Spurs Web: “At the elite level, all players will already have individualized routines, especially as it pertains to strength and conditioning.
“For on-pitch training, you need players to go through certain demands before they will be cleared for games so it is naturally going to be standardized but that is still combined with individualized treatment, ongoing S&C and assessment.”
When asked why Tottenham seem to sign so many players who go on to have injury-ridden spells in North London, he added: “On medicals, you’re looking more so for red flags and outliers than anything else. It’s not easy to predict how a player may respond to Premier League football.
“As for why, it is probably a combination of bad luck and poor judgement from Tottenham Hotspur.”
Spurs finally have a fit squad in time for Europa League quarters
After playing the vast majority of the campaign with a depleted Spurs squad, Ange Postecoglou can now finally field something close to his strongest possible XI for the Europa League quarter-finals.
Although Dejan Kulusevski, Kevin Danso, and Radu Dragusin remain sidelined, every other Tottenham player took part in training on Wednesday ahead of the Eintracht Frankfurt clash.
Spurs Web believe that Brennan Johnson, Lucas Bergvall, and Pedro Porro will be among the starting Tottenham XI to face the Bundesliga outfit on Thursday.
