Djed Spence reveals why he was frustrated despite Tottenham’s 3-1 win
Djed Spence has spoken about Tottenham returning to winning ways on Sunday and has revealed the impact the result has had on the squad ahead of their big Europa League showdown with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Tottenham Hotspur now have no choice but to put all their eggs in the Europa League basket, with the Lilywhites not only having the chance to end the season with silverware but also seal progression into the Champions League, which will put a very different frame on the whole season.
Despite their continued struggles over recent weeks, Ange Postecoglou insists that there is still belief and excitement in the Spurs squad as look to end the club’s 17-year trophy drought.
The Tottenham head coach would have been pleased to see his side go into the first leg with a win under their belt, and Spence has now revealed what the feeling is among the camp.
Djed Spence admits Tottenham win was important for confidence
The game on Sunday lacked intensity and was not filled with particularly great quality, with both sides making some mistakes.
In the end, Tottenham emerged comfortable 3-1 winners, thus confirming Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League, and Spence admitted that it was an important result to build confidence ahead of Thursday’s showdown.

However, the full-back, who played all 90 minutes on Sunday, confessed that he and his teammates were disappointed not to come away with a clean sheet.
Spence told Tottenham’s official website about the win over Saints: “It was a good game. A good result and happy with the win to build confidence ahead of Thursday.
“It was great team play (for the first goal). Sonny (Heung-Min Son) got the ball so I knew I had to support him, I made the overlap and he made a great pass to me so I just cut it back to Brennan and it was a great finish.
“It’s frustrating (to concede). We pride ourselves on clean sheets and it’s a big thing for us as a defensive unit. Not happy with it but we go again.”
Will Spence start against Frankfurt on Thursday?
Some Spurs fans would have been left surprised by the fact that Spence not only got the nod to start against Southampton, but he ended up playing all 90 minutes.
That comes despite the fact that the 24-year-old also played 90 minutes in Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge just a few days prior.
Pedro Porro was rested for the London derby while Destiny Udogie was rested for the Southampton clash, which suggests that the Spaniard and the Italian could both get the nod to start against Frankfurt, with Spence potentially dropping to the bench.
