Late Nottingham Forest comeback denies Man United U21s victory

0 3

Manchester United U21s were held to a 3-3 draw by Nottingham Forest at Leigh Sports Village on Monday evening.

Chido Obi returned to the starting line-up for the first time since February, while Elyh Harrison replaced Cameron Byrne-Hughes in goal, among other changes made by coach Travis Binnion.

United got off to a flying start as forward Bendito Mantato opened the scoring in the third minute.

Sekou Kone played a through ball to Jack Moorhouse, who cut it back for Mantato to finish.

Obi almost gave the home side a two-goal cushion but was denied by goalkeeper Keehan Willows before Harrison had to replicate the effort at the other end to preserve United’s lead.

Forest equalised in the 26th minute after United lost the ball carelessly, allowing the away side to counter — with Zyan Blake applying the finish.

Two minutes before halftime, Obi restored United’s lead after a brilliant individual effort from Moorhouse, who set up Mantato to assist the Danish striker.

Four minutes after the restart, Obi extended United’s lead, getting past his marker before running to the edge of the area and unleashing a right-footed strike past Willows.

The game took a dramatic turn in the 81st minute as Forest reduced the deficit through midfielder Kyle McAdam, who chipped the ball over Harrison from outside the box.

Two minutes before stoppage time, they completed the comeback as former United academy player Adam Berry struck the ball home from outside the area.

Obi tried to snatch a late winner for United as he drove through the Forest defence and aimed for the bottom corner with a left-footed strike, but Willows saved his effort.

The Red Devils are in eighth position in the Premier League 2 standings and are poised to qualify for the elimination play-offs and Premier League International Cup.
