Teddy Sheringham has one big worry about Archie Gray at Tottenham
Teddy Sheringham believes that Tottenham fans have every reason to be excited about Archie Gray but admitted that he is concerned about one factor which could stop the 19-year-old from fulfilling his full potential in the years to come.
While Archie Gray arrived at Tottenham with a reputation as one of the brightest young talents in the EFL, most people would have expected the youngster to have a steep learning curve at the highest level.
Yet, the teenager has looked completely unfazed by the challenges that have been thrown in front of him this season, thriving out of position as a centre-back during the club’s injury crisis.
It is due to the maturity that he has shown that Archie Gray has already been touted by pundits as a future Tottenham legend.
He has also seemingly made a fantastic impression on his teammates, with Djed Spence recently admitting that he sometimes forgets Gray is just 19, given the calmness he shows.
Archie Gray will not want to be Tottenham’s utility man
Tottenham legend Sheringham has now become the latest to join the Archie Gray fan club, admitting that he has been thoroughly impressed with how the youngster has stepped up this season.
However, Sheringham expresses concern that the former Leeds man’s versatility might work against him as it could stop him from developing into the best in any one role.
Sherringham told WDW BINGO ON: “Archie Gray has been absolutely brilliant for Tottenham this season. He was a top signing, and all Spurs fans should be excited about him.
“A lot of young players would have folded under the situation that he’s been in this season, but he has just stepped up to the plate time and time again.”
“He’s played in central midfield, on the wing, full back and centre back, putting in brilliant performances all over the pitch. He’s been a revelation.
“But I have one worry for him, and I’m sure he feels the same way, he won’t want to be known as the utility man. He will want to nail down a position for next season to have as his own to play in every week, but I think he’s been fantastic so far for Spurs.”
Spurs’ plan for Gray and Lucas Bergvall next season
Gray has had to play at centre-back out of necessity more than anything else and we have seen the youngster getting a go in the middle of the park over recent weeks.
In fact, it has been reported that Tottenham’s plan is to pair Gray with Bergvall in midfield next season, which is a partnership that promises a lot in the future.
Playing in different roles across the backline would have been useful for the teenager’s development and would have helped him gain a better understanding of the game, which is only going to help him as he slots back into midfield.
