Red Sox’s Alex Bregman Hints To Switching To Controversial Torpedo Bat

Like many of his teammates, Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman isn’t off to a scintillating start at the plate to begin the season.

But it looks like Bregman is looking to take off with a torpedo bat in his hands.

Bregman hinted at changing bats Tuesday when he posted a picture of the trendy and polarizing torpedo bat on his Instagram story. Bregman captioned the picture with his initials and jersey number along with an emoji of a rocket ship.

The bat, which puts more wood further down the bat after the label to give it its unique design, has been a topic of much debate early in the MLB season. Several Yankees players used the piece of lumber to help score 32 runs with with 13 home runs, including a franchise record nine in one game, over a two-game span. That drew the ire of Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Trevor Megill, who was on the mound with the Yankees teeing off.

“I think it’s terrible,” Megill told reporters over this past weekend, per the New York Post’s Dan Martin. “We’ll see what the data says. I’ve never seen anything like it before. I feel like it’s something used in slow-pitch softball. It’s genius: Put the mass all in one spot. It might be bush (league). It might not be. But it’s the Yankees, so they’ll let it slide.”

Bregman and the Red Sox sure could use an offensive jolt and maybe using a torpedo bat is the answer. The veteran third baseman is batting .227 with no home runs or RBIs through five games.

That’s just a microcosm of Boston’s issues in the batter’s box. They are second in all of baseball with 55 strikeouts while regular starters in Trevor Story, Connor Wong, Ceddanne Rafaela and Triston Casas are a combined 5-for-63 at the plate. And of course, Rafael Devers’ struggles are well-documented with the left-handed slugger in an 0-for-19 slump with 15 strikeouts to start the season.

If Bregman starts to get cooking offensively with a torpedo bat in his hands, it wouldn’t be a surprise if many of his Red Sox teammates follow suit.
