Ange Postecoglou admits his biggest mistake at Tottenham this season
With Tottenham Hotspur’s form faltering, Ange Postecoglou has now revealed his biggest mistake this season and what he would have done differently.
Spurs’ struggles this season have placed Ange Postecoglou under intense scrutiny. Currently, they’re nine places below where they finished last season and a far cry from the expectations set at the start of the campaign.
Tottenham’s current position—14th in the league with just 34 points after 29 matches—has raised serious concerns about their future under the Australian manager.
With speculation swirling about his future, questions about his tenure have begun to surface, and the possibility of a sacking is being discussed more frequently.
However, despite the pressure mounting on him, the club are still holding out hope that he can turn things around and lead them to a strong finish.
Ange Postecoglou would have prepared Tottenham squad better
In an interview with Optus Sport, Ange Postecoglou has opened up about the biggest mistake he’s made this season.
Reflecting on the start of the campaign, he admitted that the preparation for the new season might have been flawed, and that some of the challenges Tottenham Hotspur faced this year could have been avoided.
He said: “I guess the domino effect of certain things happening. You try and assess things as you go along but my inclination is we probably got the start of the year wrong.
“It’s becoming increasingly challenging for footballers these days they don’t get a traditional break, I just think we went into the start of the season really hard and probably underestimated the challenges of Europe this year with your two extra games and having a big cup run.
“Then you add into the mix that we lost some key players earlier on and it feels like we’ve been chasing our tail ever since and we haven’t been able to get some steady ground. A lot of that goes back to the start of the year, maybe we would have taken a different approach knowing the season we had ahead.”
European football: A challenge Postecoglou underestimated
It’s hard to ignore the impact that European football has had on Tottenham’s performance this season, and Postecoglou’s comments shed light on how challenging it has been.
Last season, the Lilywhites were still in the race for European qualification, sitting fifth in the table with 53 points—just three behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.
# | Club | Short Name | Matches | +/- | Pts |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Arsenal FC | Arsenal | 29 | 51 | 67 |
2 | Manchester City | Man City | 29 | 39 | 66 |
3 | Liverpool FC | Liverpool | 29 | 37 | 64 |
4 | Aston Villa | Aston Villa | 29 | 18 | 56 |
5 | Tottenham Hotspur | Tottenham | 29 | 15 | 53 |
This season, however, the story is vastly different. Spurs now find themselves 15 points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea, sitting uncomfortably in 14th place with only 34 points.
Injuries have undoubtedly played a part in this decline, but with Postecoglou finally having his strongest XI of the season at his disposal, the hope is that he can learn from his early mistakes and deliver a strong finish.
