'Not going to happen': Amorim says 'world-class' £47m star won't be sold by Man Utd

Manchester United take on Nottingham Forest in tonight’s Premier League clash at City Ground.

Ahead of the game, manager Ruben Amorim was asked plenty of questions by reporters.

The 40-year-old provided an injury update and confirmed two players could return versus Forest.

Amorim also clarified that Bruno Fernandes is not going anywhere amid surprise speculation that Real Madrid are preparing a formal bid for the Portugal international.

The manager said: “No, it’s not going to happen. That is the challenge.

“I want Bruno here because like I said, maybe in the lowest moments of our season, we want to win the Premier League again.

“So we want the best players to continue with us. He’s 29 [30], I think, but he’s still so young because he plays 50, 55 games every season.

“Between assists and goals, he’s there for 30 [of them], at least. So he’s the type of player that we want here, he’s not going anywhere.”

Fernandes, described as ‘world-class‘ by United’s official website, has been a revelation for the Red Devils since his £47 million move from Sporting CP in the winter of 2020.

He has registered a sensational tally of 95 goals and 82 assists from 277 appearances. He started the current campaign in a slow fashion but has picked up form in recent weeks.

The 32-year-old has amassed 16 goals and 16 assists in all competitions. His form has been exemplary in the last four games, with nine goal contributions for the Red Devils.

We recently covered an opinion that Fernandes’ exit would take the club backwards in Amorim’s project. It does not make sense to offload the most creative player in the squad.

The Red Devils must build the team around their talismanic captain. Fernandes’ assist tally at United would have been much higher with a world-class striker leading the line.

The Portuguese has a big role to play in the coming weeks for United. The club are languishing 13th in the league and need to finish as high as possible to secure more TV revenue.

They also have a crucial Europa League quarter-final tie against Lyon. The Red Devils must win the European competition this campaign to qualify for the Champions League.

Champions League football could play a major role in persuading elite strikers such as Viktor Gyokeres to join the club amid ‘strong interest‘ from Premier League rivals Arsenal.
