The Spanish media is running out of superlatives to describe Johnny Cardoso after his latest showing in the Seville derby, with many outlets convinced that Tottenham Hotspur are about to get a massive steal this summer.

The midfield department is expected to be a priority for Ange Postecoglou to address in the summer, particularly given Yves Bissouma’s continued struggles this season and Rodrigo Bentancur’s lack of consistency.

One La Liga man will undoubtedly be near the top of the North London club’s wishlist after Tottenham acquired a £21m option to buy Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis last summer while striking a deal for Giovani Lo Celso.

The 23-year-old continued his impressive run of form, producing a final display in the Seville derby on Sunday to help Real Betis emerge 2-1 winners.

Cardoso scored the all-important equaliser for Betis with a brilliant volley on 25 minutes, showing that he has more to his game than just breaking up play in midfield and recycling possession.

It is Johnny Cardoso’s all-around game that has left several Spanish outlets in complete amazement, with many publications lavishing praise on the Tottenham target.

ElDemarque gave him a 9/10 and claimed: “Omnipresent. Omnipotent. He’s become a complete midfielder. An all-rounder. Active in pressing after losing possession, always well positioned, correcting his teammates’ mistakes, makes interceptions and is judicious when it comes to joining the attack. If he also scores… In the end, £21m won’t be enough.”

There was another 9/10 rating from Estadio Deportivo, who said: “The midfielder played a very complete game. He was brilliant defensively, blocking several dangerous balls and scoring a goal. Real Betis’ best player. The sheriff of the Seville derby.”

Meanwhile, Diario de Sevilla wrote: “A very good game. He’s capable of attacking, and he showed it with the great volley he fired in to tie the game.”

Finally, Betisweb named Cardoso as their Man of the Match: “Sevilla is green and white thanks to everyone who played this amazing match today, but today the derby is green and white thanks to Johnny Cardoso. The United States international not only put on a brilliant display against their arch-rival, but he also had the nerve to score a volley to tie the game, which had been tinged with green and white from the start.”

Just a few days ago, Johnny Cardoso broke his silence about his future as speculation regarding a potential switch to Tottenham this summer continues to intensify.

The midfielder confessed that he is happy to be linked with a move to the Lilywhites but insisted that he remains focused on having a strong end to the season at Estadio Benito Villamarin.

When asked what it means for a club like Tottenham to show such keen interest in him, Cardoso said: “I can’t lie, and it’s true that it’s something that gives me confidence, that makes me feel valued because I’m doing a good job.

“But I always try to improve and do my best for the benefit of the group and grow as a person on and off the field. However, right now my focus is only on Betis. This season we have important things to think about.”
