Over recent days, it has been reported that Tottenham are ready to make a U-turn and cash in on Romero as the likes of Atletico Madrid step up their interest in the player.
A new update has now suggested that Spurs have already started making plans to replace their vice-captain as the summer window draws closer.
Tottenham’s five-man shortlist to replace Cristian Romero
Fichajes now say that the centre-back’s time at Tottenham Hotspur appears to be coming to an end this summer as interest in his services continues to intensify.
The report says that the likes of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are among those plotting a summer move for Romero, with Tottenham potentially fearing losing the 26-year-old.
As a result, the club’s recruitment department have now shortlisted five names to replace the World Cup winner if he does depart.
The outlet reveals that Jonathan Tah, Dean Huijsen, Marc Guehi, Milan Skriniar and Jarrad Branthwaite are currently on Tottenham’s shortlist to replace Romero.
Who is Spurs’ top choice to replace Romero?
Fichajes say that among these five names, Guehi has been identified as the ‘most suitable option’ to take Cristian Romero’s place in the Tottenham squad.
The 24-year-old was already a target for Spurs in January, and it is explained that the Lilywhites believe that the England international would be able to slot seamlessly into their backline, given the experience that he now possesses.
It is suggested that should a deal for the Palace man not be possible, Huijsen might be the next alternative Tottenham consider, with the North London club being fans of the Bournemouth man’s imposing physique and ability in the air.
