Aston Villa Triumph at Deepdale: Rashford Shines But Kamara Steals the Show
Villa delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over Preston North End at Deepdale in the FA Cup quarter-finals, securing a place in the semi-finals at Wembley. While the scoreline suggests a one-sided affair, the match was anything but straightforward, with Preston putting up a spirited fight—especially in the first half and the opening exchanges of the second. However, Villa’s superior quality eventually shone through, with Marcus Rashford’s goals and an outstanding performance from Boubacar Kamara proving decisive.
Preston North End, the last remaining Championship side in the competition, entered the game with a clear game plan: frustrate Villa and capitalise on any defensive lapses. For the first 45 minutes, they executed this strategy admirably. Their resilience carried into the second half, maintaining their shape and intensity for the first five to ten minutes. They harried Villa’s midfield, trying to keep the Premier League side at bay. But as the minutes ticked by, the difference in quality between the two teams became increasingly apparent.
The turning point came in the 59th minute when Lucas Digne delivered a pinpoint low cross to Marcus Rashford. The on-loan forward, making his mark at the Villa, side-footed the ball past the keeper with composure to break the deadlock. It was a goal that silenced the Deepdale faithful and opened the floodgates. Just five minutes later, Rashford doubled his tally, and Jacob Ramsey got in on the act with a brilliant solo effort, firing past the Preston goalkeeper. By then, the contest was effectively over.
For me, the standout performer was Boubacar Kamara—he was my MOTM. While Rashford’s goals will grab the headlines, and rightfully so, Kamara’s dominance in midfield was outstanding. He was everywhere—breaking up Preston’s rare forays forward, distributing the ball with precision, and dictating the tempo of the game. His tireless work rate ensured Preston couldn’t sustain their early momentum. Kamara was absolutely brilliant, a quiet maestro pulling the strings from the heart of the pitch.
But, a special mention must go to Marcus Rashford, who is truly flourishing here at Aston Villa. His goals against Preston were a statement of intent, ending his goal drought and proving he’s rediscovering his form under Emery’s guidance. The first goal was a striker’s finish—calm and precise—while the penalty added to his tally. Rashford’s directness, energy, and willingness to take responsibility have endeared him to the Villa faithful, and long may that continue.
Preston’s lack of cutting edge in the final third was their undoing. While they competed valiantly, they couldn’t match Villa’s clinical finishing or the depth of talent on display. Our ability to shift gears and punish the opposition highlighted the gulf between the Championship and the Premier League elite. This win now sets up a tantalising FA Cup semi-final clash with Crystal Palace. Preston gave us a little food for thought, but once we found our rhythm, it was game over. UTV
